The Dutchess & The Duke @ Union Park (07.18.09)
These guys still rule. The new disc isn’t quite as enduring as the first one, but it still makes me feel alright.
Dengue Fever: An Ethanopium Bounce

There aren’t too many better things in life than finding some funky instrumentals. Dengue Fever does more than that, but the tracks that the LA based band turns in sans vox are as dusty sounding as they are incredible.
Misty in Roots: A Continental Reggae
I wasn’t able to hunt down the first Misty in Roots album – a live affair. But seeing as the group’s second disc was in concert as well, it’ll suffice. The 1982 follow up might sound a bit technologically advanced in comparison to that late ’70s effort, but it’s no slouch. And even it both discs stunk, they’d be better than UB40.

To Forego the RZA: U-God’s Dopium

Mos def not a classic, but a good deal of Dopium surpasses the slew of internet sensations currently knocking about…

Skinheads x Reggae, Reggae
I have no idea what movie or program this is actually from, but I copped it at Crop No. 1…Dig the racist 14 year olds explaining that they don’t hate all brown folks, they like Jamaicans.
Blu x Knox College
I was unaware that Blu had disappeared, but he turned up at Knox College over there in Illinois. That first song sounds unfamiliar, but following the Johnson & Johnson stuff comes off a bit better live…We’re still just waiting for that major label debut, though…
Jay Reatard x Fuel TV
Well, that song (above) kinda rules and is a pleasant return to form after the split with Sonic Youth…the fact that Fuel TV saw fit to censor this, though, is preposterous.
Good stuff apart from that.
“My Shadow” (below) already seems like a modern classic and this version finds Mr. Reatard inserting more power pop-ness than on the album version…
Naomi Shelton: Alabama to Brooklyn

What Have You Done, My Brother? brims with soul, funk and gospel…A fresh scent from Daptone…check x Osmosis.

Tash – “New Bikini” (Amalgam Digital)
If you close your eyes, you can almost pretend it’s Tha Liks…
Any other rapper goin’ in on this beat would make it impossible to stomach…and yeah, the video is ridiculous. Some of the comic book panel stuff is pretty decent, though…
Darondo’s “Listen to My Song”
Some new soul from a Bay Area legend. Maybe he was a pimp, maybe he wasn’t.
Even if the best part of “Listen to My Song” is when there’s a close up of Darondo’s feet dancing on some indoor/outdoor carpet, “Didn’t I” is still classic.
